Seasonal depression is classified as a mood disorder, better known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), this disorder is common in young adults, teenagers and military personnel. These changes typically occur when the seasons change, which can affect your mood, mentality and behavior. Usually, this disorder affects women and young girls more which has influenced overall views, values and perceptions on depression among that demographic.
This seasonal change occurs when there is a interruption with the circadian system which knocks the body off balance. Seasonal depression influences a person's energy, viewpoints and interaction levels which causes them to make poor decisions. SAD can affect your cognitive and emotional abilities which can negatively impact your overall personality and character. The symptoms might start during early autumn and end near the beginning of spring, over 3 million Americans suffer from SAD.
This disorder can affect people during warmer months but it is very rare however it begins early spring and ends near the middle of autumn. SAD can affect your daily life which impacts your work and overall personal performances; treatment and therapy are options for this disorder but specialists recommend patients to modify their diet and sunlight exposure. There are various reasons that can cause SAD which can differ between race, socioeconomic status and overall background.
There are ways to learn and recognize the signs, in order to help yourself or others that are experiencing SAD. Symptoms can differ between genders and age groups, however the signs are commonly similar. For example, traits and behaviors such as sadness, mood swings, loss of concentration & desire, insomnia, overeating, anxiety, irritability, extreme fatigue or lack of energy/motivation.
These are just some common traits that SAD patients face during their seasonal episodes. Assessments are used to determine SAD and mood disorders, however there are no valid diagnostic tests currently for this disorder. There are ways to decrease or eliminate your seasonal depression such as: increasing vitamin D/C intake, participating in photo or cognitive behavioral therapy, antidepressants, improving exercise & water levels.
